What is not Yoga?

Vritti sarupyam itaratra

At other times (when not in the state of Yoga), the mind identifies with the distorted conception of the object or a total lack of comprehension.

When we are not in a state of Yoga as described in the previous sutra,  the mind is in a confused state with no clarity. A disturbed mind can rarely follow a direction. If it ever does, comprehension of the object will be faulty. We forget who we are and get caught up with various self images projected by the confused mind.

Vritti sarupyam itaratra

Vrtti – fluctuation
Sarupyam – conformity, from sa + rupa is form
Itaratra – otherwise, at other times
