Indus Valley

The picture is that of Shiva from the Indus Valley times. I was reminded of this picture after Papi blogged about  A Picture is worth a thousand words.  This sculpture is believed to be of Shiva, who is also known as Pasupati, the Lord of the beasts. You will see a lot of animals around Shiva. This also goes to show that Hinduism is not an import and is believed to be indigenous to India. What is most interesting to me is that the person is depicted in a Yoga pose. This picture is known as proto-Shiva and is seated in a pose called Mulabandhasana. This pose is extremely difficult and it is not possible to get into it accidentally. This again goes to show that Yoga was being practiced during the Indus Valley civilization.

Here’s a picture of my man, Sri Krishnamacharya in Mulabandhasana. The fact that Proto-Shiva is in a yogic pose was noticed by a student of TKV Desikachar named Yan Dhyansky. He has written about the Indus Valley origin of Yoga Practice, I got the link to this paper from here.
