Pronounced as You-gaa-dhee. Ugadi marks the new year for a few states in India and was celebrated yesterday. Ugadi means we move from one yug (period) to the beginning of the next yug. A paste made with neem and jaggery is the trademark of this festival. This mixture tastes quite bitter even though the jaggery is sweet. This is consumed as a reminder that we need to know how to balance the bad and the good times, they come and go. So we need to learn to accept both. According to Ayurveda, neem cleanses the body, but neem is very bitter. To make it tolerable, jaggery is added to the neem.
The neem and mango trees have plenty of flowers in this season. Ugadi is a reminder that the mangoes are in the making and the summer will pick up pace pretty soon.
